Expect but don’t Forget

Wow! I can still remember the ending of 2016 and getting ready for 2017. As usual, I entered the New Year with expectancy for greater and better things than what the year before had in store. Surprisingly, 2017 was a year of growth for me rather than a year of prosperity like I had hoped for. Nonetheless 2017 was filled with wonder and unexpected blessings.

Instead of getting what I hoped for this year, I got what I didn’t know I needed. You see, I thought I was good to go and ready to receive the promises of God over my life in 2017. But God knows me better than I know myself and He knows you better than you know yourself. He’s God! He sees the bigger picture of your life, which includes your destiny and your purpose while you can only see a small portion of it. God sees the finished canvas; we get to experience the process behind it although it’s not always enjoyable.

What I didn’t know I needed was more growth in my character in order to receive the promises of God waiting for me. Your greatest blessings depend on your character. Will your character match your blessing? God won’t bless you unless your character is fit for the blessing He’s prepared for you. This year my character was constantly being challenged by the most random of individuals and circumstances, but it was also being refined as I sought God for wisdom and guidance.

In addition to growth, 2017 also expanded my faith. Both of my little sisters got engaged! Whaaaaaat?! One is married now and the other is soon to be married in the New Year 2018. I could have complained or felt sad about it, but I chose to be happy and excited for them. I would have never thought I would be the last to marry of the three of us. I mean c’mon, what ever happened to birth order? Also, I didn’t expect to go back to my old job in 2017 but God has his ways of surprising us in the most unexpected ways. He continues to teach me and show me His ways for my life and I’m choosing to trust Him, believe Him and wait on Him rather than getting frustrated, upset or impatient although at times it is difficult not to.

We should always live with expectancy for greater things, but never forget there will be opposition in order to receive those greater things God has in store for us. It’s not a matter of “if opposition comes” but “when opposition comes” we should always remember whose we are and what we’ve been clothed with.

You are clothed with strength and dignity to laugh without fear of the future (Proverbs 31:25). In other words, no matter what 2018 may throw at you, you are strong and you have victory through your response to those uncertainties. Your crown of anointing and sash of honor should never be undermined because of your circumstances.

Isaiah 43:1-2 “But now, this is what the Lord says, he who created you, Jacob [fill in your name], he who formed you, Israel [fill in your name]: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When [not if] you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when [not if] you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When [not if] you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.”

Remember, you can expect for great things to happen in 2018 including God’s love, grace, mercy and strength for you, but don’t forget opposition will rise against you and you must be willing to endure and persevere in order to overcome through God’s promises and truth over you. Be encouraged.
